Donghua
Zen Temple is located in Wengyuan, Guangdong Province. Its archway stands as a
defining landmark of the temple and is of great significance.Like a striking
boundary marker, it clearly demarcates the divide between the secular
world and the pure land of Buddhism.When people arrive at the archway, it is as
if they had entered another world filled with Zen.This archway, designed in the
prestigious Five-Gate, Six-Pillar configuration,represents the
grandest architectural tier among Chinese folk temples. Its exquisite
craftsmanship and dignified yet grand overall appearance, from the carved
details to the structural layout, demonstrate the craftsmen's reverence for
Buddhist culture and their exceptional craftsmanship.
According
to temple tradition, the ceremonial arch marks the boundary for welcoming and
seeing off guests. This appropriate level of etiquette shows the temple's warm
hospitality while maintaining the quiet and solemn atmosphere of Buddhism. Upon
entering the archway,two paths unfold—the Lingjiu Road to the left and Chengfo
Road to the right. The two roads seem to silently tell of different paths of cultivation, waiting for those with a connection to explore them.
Passing
through the archway and moving toward the Three-Gate Hall, there are many other
places worth exploring along the way.The Maitreya Buddha , with exposed chest
and belly, wears a warm and inviting smile, embodying a profound meaning of acceptance
and karmic connections. The five children surrounding it carry rich symbolic
meanings such as the arrival of the Five Blessings—a
cherished Chinese auspicious concept.
The Stone Stele carried by a Dragon-Turtle carries a
touching legend. The Dragon-Turtle's spirit of dedication has earned its
revered status，while the stele it bears records the history of Donghua
Zen Temple. There is also a pair of precious qilin donated by a benefactor from
Hebei Province, symbolizing auspiciousness and implying that people should
possess a variety of excellent qualities.
